A little bit about Signature Art
I am Rachael, an equine and animal portrait artist based in a small village in Gloucestershire. I have a huge love for animals and art, and I am fortunate to be able to combine them both.
I recently set up my own equine and animal portrait business www.rksignatureart.com and it has been incredibly exciting watching it grow and establish over the last 9 months.
A little bit about me and my journey: I have loved animals from a very young age, especially horses. In my school days every opportunity to draw a horse was taken – it was often suggested I might need to broaden my interests! I studied Art GCSE and then A-level and this began my animal portraits with coursework and final projects based on ‘The Horse’.
I gained my Foundation Art ‘distinction’ degree at Cheltenham and chose to study Interior Architecture at UWIC Cardiff gaining my BA 2:1. Cardiff, not being far from home, enabled me to return home most weekends to work at a local hunt and point to point yard. I was able to ride and work with many different horses throughout my teenage years. After leaving University I initially worked as an Architectural assistant in Bath for a few years before joining a firm of Architects and Designers in Tetbury, where I now worked full time as a Designer and became a member of the Chartered Society of Designers. After leaving university and starting my career I was finally able to afford my own horse!
I am now mother to two gorgeous little girls who both have a love for animals and art - proud mum! So along with my ever-patient husband, our cat, two guinea pigs, and two horses, I now work part time as a Senior Designer alongside running my equine and animal portrait business - life can be quite hectic.
Until this last year my animal portrait work has been a hobby with commissions from friends and family. Art is something I really enjoy, as a hobby and time out from day to day life but also for the joy it brings to people, something I feel very grateful and lucky to be able to do. I know and understand the sheer joy our much-loved animals and pets bring to our lives and to be able to capture that in a picture, to be treasured and kept for years to come is just so rewarding.
My work is generally in chalk pastel, I love the realism, the photo like quality and the detail I can achieve, I also work in Acrylics, pen and ink and pencil. I have recently started using pencil crayon on various papers and I’m impressed with the level of detail and realism that I am achieving.
Historically the majority of my work has been photo realism which I greatly enjoy however, to broaden my portfolio I have been experimenting with a more cheeky, characterful approach with the use of acrylics for my greeting’s cards, which is a lot of fun. My girls have loved coming up with ideas for these.
My portraits are taken from photos and are completely bespoke, unique and personal to the client, with many repeat commissions. This is a very personal process and of upmost importance that my client is 100% satisfied. I am very proud of the work I produce and the business I have created.
