Preparing a Safe Foaling Environment

A foaling box plays a vital role in protecting both mare and foal during birth and early bonding. Space, ventilation, hygiene and footing all contribute to reducing stress, supporting natural movement and maintaining a clean, controlled environment during this critical period.

While bedding and stable layout are often carefully considered, flooring is frequently overlooked — despite being the surface every step, lie-down and first stand depends on. Poor footing can increase slip risk, harbour bacteria and make effective cleaning more difficult between foalings.

Choosing the right flooring helps create a safer, more hygienic foaling space, supporting confidence, comfort and long-term soundness from the very first moments of life.

SUPPORT WHEN IT MATTERS MOST

At the core of ComfortStall is a resilient, cushioned layer designed to provide consistent support for mares and newborn foals during standing, lying and early movement. The yielding surface helps absorb impact, promotes natural joint alignment and supports safe, stable transitions from lying to standing — particularly important during a foal’s first moments of mobility.

Combined with a fully sealed, non-slip top layer, ComfortStall creates a hygienic, low-risk foaling environment that is easy to clean and disinfect between births, supporting both animal welfare and efficient stable management.

  • 1. Fast, Effective Disinfection

Foaling involves fluids and frequent monitoring — a sealed surface that can be cleaned and disinfected thoroughly and quickly helps reduce hygiene risk between births.

  • 2. Cushioned Support for Mare & Foal

Shock-absorbing support helps reduce impact on the mare during lying/standing and supports new-born foals as they learn to stand and balance.

  • 3. Secure Footing When It Matters Most

A high-grip surface reduces slip risk during foaling, early standing attempts and routine handling — especially when the box is wet.

  • 4. Less Bedding, Better Hygiene Control

A cushioned base can help reduce reliance on deep bedding, lowering moisture retention and making it easier to maintain a clean, consistent foaling environment.

  • 5. Reduced Daily Labour & Running Costs

Faster clean-downs and reduced bedding use can save time, lower ongoing costs and simplify day-to-day management during a busy foaling season.

  • 6. Encourages Rest & Calm Recovery

A comfortable, supportive surface helps mares settle and rest more naturally after foaling, supporting calm bonding and early recovery.

  • 7. A Professional, Purpose-Built Foaling Setup

A seamless, hygienic flooring system reflects high standards of welfare and management — reassuring for staff, owners and visiting vets.

  • 8. Built for Long-Term Durability

Designed for demanding stable environments and regular cleaning, ComfortStall offers long-lasting performance and strong ROI across multiple foaling seasons.

Comfortstall Testimonials

"ComfortStall flooring has been a game changer in our knock down boxes. The floors are easy to clean, hard wearing and provide just the right amount of grip for a horse recovering from surgery. The service we receive from the team is excellent and nothing is too much trouble."

Matt Hecking, Hospital Manager for Oakham Equine Vets:

"Today we christened our new recovery box with two high end surgeries. One was a stifle arthroscopy and the other a tie back/hobday combination. Both horses recovered super well, with the non slippy, sealed and padded walls and floor giving them plenty of comfort and hygiene!”

Tullyraine Equine Clinic, Northern Ireland

“Charlie, our first patient to use the ComfortStall flooring. He seemed to love the flooring and seemed very comfortable throughout his stay...‘Our grooms love it as it is so easy to look after’ and when Charlie knocked over his water bucket we noticed that this did not make the floor slippy. ‘We set the stable up with half the amount of shavings that we would normally use for a bed [...] which is very encouraging from a financial point of view!’

University of Glasgow, School of Veterinary Medicine

“We still have the original foam in all of the recovery stalls since 2005. Overall, it appears to be the best surface we have come across. In my opinion, as a horse owner, I think it is far superior to regular rubber mats for normal stabling. Nothing is ever easy with horses, but this flooring would **reduce the labor and bedding expense and help ensure the horse’s soundness and comfort.”— Ann Townsend-Pors, LVTAnesthesia Dept, Equine Hospital, Cornell University Hospital for Animals

FAQs

Are stable rubber mats toxic?

ComfortStall rubber topcoat features five layers of non-toxic vulcanised sheeting.

Crumb rubber featured in geotextile flooring can be toxic and all rubber is toxic when burnt.

How many rubber mats do I need for my stable?

While most rubber stable mats require multiple sheets to fit a stable, ComfortStall’s IronClad TopCover is installed as a single piece of material that using a boxcutter, you will trim to the individual size for your needs. The impermeable surface allows for a completely sealed stable floor with no escape routes for urine, muck, or bedding.

How do I install ComfortStall?

Your ComfortStall flooring will be professionally installed by one of our trusted fitters, ensuring a high-quality, expert finish. Installation typically takes one day, and we recommend keeping your horse out of the stable for 24 hours to allow the adhesive to fully cure.

Do you need to use bedding with rubber stable mats? If so, what bedding is best to use?

While standard rubber stable matting offers limited cushion and requires a considerable amount of bedding to provide support to your horse, ComfortStall on its own gives your horse all the cushion he requires. With ComfortStall, we suggest using only a small amount of absorbent bedding where your horse most frequently urinates to soak up any liquids.

How do I clean stable rubber mats?

Standard rubber stable mats are labour intensive to clean as they are heavy and messy. ComfortStall however, is very easy to clean, with its impermeable Ironclad TopCover. Simply remove any soiled bedding, it can be hose or power washed daily also.

Do rubber stable mats absorb urine?

Standard rubber stable mats do not absorb urine, but the gaps in between the mats allow for urine to seep through to the subsurface where it tends to pool. This creates the perfect environment for urea to react with bacteria and off-gas as the respiratory irritant ammonia. Since ComfortStall is both impermeable and fully sealed, urine stays on top of the TopCover and is easily removed when mucking out or with a quick wash or sweep.

How do I muck out a stable with rubber matting?

Remove the droppings and wet bedding with a shavings fork or small shovel. ComfortStall on its own gives your horse all the cushion he requires. However, we suggest using a small amount of absorbent bedding where your horse most frequently urinates to soak up any liquids. If using bedding, remove the wet shavings and sweep out. If you are not using bedding the urine can be swept or washed out of the stable. This should only take 5-10 mins.

Will ComfortStall puncture or tear?

ComfortStall’s IronClad TopCover is incredibly durable and will not puncture or tear easily. However, we would advise to not fit studs or allow a horse with studs fitted to stand on ComfortStall, as this could cause damage to the TopCover. Standard nails and road studs are safe to stand on ComfortStall.

Are rubber stable mats slippery?

Rubber stable mats tend to be slippery when wet. However, ComfortStall’s IronClad TopCover is an anti-slip material. Additionally, the cushion provided by the orthopaedic foam causes the horse to sink slightly into the surface for additional grip.

Is ComfortStall stable flooring suitable for foaling boxes?

Yes, ComfortStall is ideal for foaling boxes. The orthopedic foam layer provides exceptional cushioning and support, which is crucial for both the mare and her newborn foal. The anti-slip rubber TopCover ensures a stable surface, reducing the risk of slips and falls. Additionally, the fully sealed design makes it easy to clean and maintain, helping to keep the foaling box hygienic and comfortable. ComfortStall’s features make it a great choice for creating a safe and supportive environment for foaling.

Is ComfortStall suitable for use in equine veterinary hospitals?

Yes, ComfortStall is suitable for use in veterinary hospitals. Its fully sealed design and durable, anti-slip rubber TopCover provide a hygienic and comfortable surface for recovery and treatment areas. The orthopaedic foam layer offers additional cushioning, which is beneficial for animals that may be recovering from surgery or illness. The easy-to-clean surface helps maintain a sterile environment, making ComfortStall an excellent choice for veterinary settings where cleanliness and animal comfort are top priorities.
