FAQs
What is the Haygain Breather?
The Haygain Breather is a portable equine nebulisation system. It converts liquid medication or isotonic saline into a fine aerosol that is inhaled directly into the respiratory tract using a purpose-designed equine mask.
What is the service life of the nebuliser parts?
The service life of the medicine cup is 90 uses, depending on what is nebulised and cleaning/care.The service life of the nebuliser battery part is up to 2 years depending on care, after which it will need replacing. The cost of the replacement part is very reasonable - roughly equal to 2 medicine cups and the part HG-0001 also comes included with an additional medicine cup.
What should be nebulised?
Only nebulised aqueous medications or isotonic saline that have been approved and prescribed by your veterinary surgeon should be used. Always follow your veterinarian's instructions regarding medication type and dosage.
How do I introduce my horse to the nebuliser?
Introduce the mask gradually:
- Place the mask gently over your horse's muzzle with the lower vent open.
- Allow your horse to breathe normally and become comfortable wearing the mask.
- Once the nostrils are enclosed and a comfortable seal is formed, allow your horse to relax.
- Close the lower vent and begin nebulisation.
- If your horse becomes anxious, reopen the vent slightly to increase airflow until they settle.
- In an emergency, the lower vent can be completely removed to restore unrestricted airflow.
Can my horse breathe normally while wearing the mask?
Yes. The lower vent should initially remain open so your horse can become accustomed to the mask before treatment begins.
Is the mask flexible?
Yes. The mask is flexible for comfort, but the nebuliser unit itself is rigid. Handlers should remain aware of their horse's head movements throughout treatment.
How do I start a nebulising session?
Before each session:
- Review the safety and maintenance instructions.
- Check that the inlet and outlet valves move freely.
- Open the lower vent.
- Fill the medication cup exactly as directed by your veterinarian.
- Once your horse is comfortable, close the vent.
- Press the power button briefly to begin treatment.
- Mist should begin within a few seconds.
- The aerosol chamber will fill during exhalation and clear during inhalation.
How long does a treatment last?
The controller automatically switches off after approximately 15 minutes, although you can stop treatment earlier if required.
How do I recharge the nebuliser?
Recharge the unit using a USB-C charger.
How do I clean the medication cup after every use?
Immediate cleaning helps protect the vibrating mesh.
- Switch the unit off.
- Add 3–6 ml of distilled water to the medication cup.
- Press and hold the power button for 3 seconds to activate Cleaning Mode.
- The green light will slowly pulse during the 3-minute cleaning cycle.
- The unit will automatically switch off when complete.
How do I deep clean the medication cup?
If extra cleaning is required:
- Add 2–3 drops of mild washing-up liquid (not dishwasher detergent).
- Fill with distilled water.
- Seal and shake vigorously for around 15 seconds.
- Rinse thoroughly.
- Do not switch the nebuliser on during this process.
- Clean the electrodes gently using a cotton bud.
- Rinse both sides thoroughly with distilled water.
- Leave to air dry completely.
How do I clean the mask?
- Wash in warm water using a mild detergent.
- Rinse thoroughly.
- Allow to dry completely.
- For disinfection, disassemble the mask, wash, dry, then wipe with antibacterial wipes or an FS Animal Health approved disinfectant.
How should I care for the nebuliser?
- Store and use only in dry environments.
- Recharge when the battery indicator turns orange.
- Clean thoroughly after every treatment to maximise the life of the medication cup.
Never:
- Immerse the nebuliser or medication cup in water.
- Use chemical cleaning agents inside the medication cup.
- Touch the vibrating mesh.
- Clean any parts in a dishwasher.
- Dry components in a microwave.
- Sterilise the nebuliser or medication cup.
