Congratulation Prof. Meriel Moore-Colyer on being nominated the first Professor in Equine Science by RAU

Congratulations Professor Meriel Moore-Colyer, who will be joining a select pool of UK professors in this area. HAYGAIN feel very privileged to have Meriel as our scientific consultant.

The Royal Agricultural University (RAU) is pleased to announce its first Professor in Equine Science, Professor Meriel Moore-Colyer, who will be joining a select pool of UK professors in this area.

Professor Moore-Colyer is the first Dean of the School of Equine Management and Science (SEMS) at the RAU. Formed in 2014, the School is an exciting new development which offers a portfolio of equine-focused international, science and business courses which have been developed in consultation with the industry since 1992. SEMS research specialisms are equine nutrition, genetics, and behaviour.
Professor Moore-Colyer said: “SEMS has a vibrant research group working on very exciting projects. I hope my appointment will further enhance this activity and show the equine industry that we are serious about research and our mission to improve the health and welfare of the horse.”

RAU Vice-Chancellor, Professor Chris Gaskell, said: “This is very well deserved recognition for Professor Moore-Colyer, and a mark of the very good work in both teaching and research that is going on in the new School; I wish I had time to do one of the courses!”

With a BSc (Hons) in agriculture and a PhD in equine nutrition, Professor Moore-Colyer is well-placed to appreciate and develop the relationship between the horse and agricultural industries. A Registered Animal Scientist with the Society of Biology, Meriel is an active researcher and teacher, with a wide range of publications on equine nutrition and the health and welfare of the stabled horse. A practical horse woman for as long as she can remember she currently competes her home-bred Irish Draught x Thoroughbred horse at small tour level in dressage.

Professor Moore-Colyer commented: “Riding is a very important part of my life. Being in daily contact with horses helps me appreciate the practical challenges that face the industry, and has been the catalyst to many of the exciting product development projects I have been lucky enough to work on with many UK and Irish-based commercial companies.
