Is a cough normal? No!

You've asked your veterinarian, your best barn buddy and Google whether your horse's occasional cough might be a problem. It seems minor, but you've heard that could be a sign of respiratory challenge.

You're right.

"Haygain Steamed Hay" is the answer you keep hearing. But why? How would feeding your horse hot hay help resolve or prevent a respiratory problem?

Haygain Hay Steaming helps because it reduces up to 99% of the respirable particles commonly found in forage - even forage that looks and smells clean and healthy. These invisible bits of mold, bacteria and other allergens are the main cause of respiratory problems in our horses.

By removing them from your horse's hay, you are greatly reducing your horse's chance of developing a problem. In fact, a 2018 research project showed that horses fed Haygain Steamed Hay were 65% less likely to develop conditions on the Equine Asthma Spectrum.

WHY NOT SOAK MY HAY?

Soaking hay will dampen down some of the respirable particles, but it comes with many downsides. Soaking leaches nutrients, it can spur bacteria and mold growth and produce toxic effluent. Plus, it's a messy hassle and many horses don't like the taste.

WHY IS HAYGAIN STEAMING EFFECTIVE?

Temperatures of around 100ºC are reached and retained long enough to kill mold and bacteria and to reduce other allergens and irritants.

Haygain's patented steaming technology injects steam evenly throughout all the hay in a thermally-sealed chest.

Haygain Steaming is proven to improve palatability. Given a choice of dry, soaked or steamed hay, most horses choose steamed forage.

HOW DO I USE A HAYGAIN HAY STEAMER?

  1. Load forage into the chest and fill the steam generator with water.
  2. Turn the steam generator on and carry on with chores or go riding during the approximately one-hour steaming cycle. Standard outdoor timers work with Haygain steamers.
  3. Feed the hay shortly after it cools, or up to 24 hours later.

Enjoy the peace of mind knowing your horse is getting everything he needs from his hay, and nothing he doesn't!
